How We Got Here
We got our unofficial start on January 20, 2009, selling buttons and t-shirts in Washington DC at President Obama’s first Inauguration. Back then, we were two (much younger!) progressive women, excited about the future, and determined to be a part of it. So, we printed a banner and a bunch of buttons and t-shirts, and then we recruited a few of our friends to join us on our adventure. Anticipation and trepidation were both so high at the time - after all, our first Black president was about to take office - that to even get a spot for our booth, we had to enter a lottery. To increase our odds, we paid to have a dozen of our friends apply for background checks along with us, in preparation for the application process.

The Blue Deal at Obama's Inauguration

When we got to our spot on F Street NW at midnight, (that’s us in the pic!) the temperature was in the twenties, the wind was relentless, and the wind chill hovered near the single digits. What we remember most about that day, besides the palpable excitement of the history being made, and the disappointment we felt when we realized that we were positioned on a side street with ZERO pedestrian traffic, was the bone-chilling cold. The high that day very briefly reached 30 degrees, while the winds gusted at 20-25 mph with no sun in sight – especially in the concrete canyon in which we found ourselves. Talk to any of the million plus people who were there that day, and they will invariably have their own story about how unbelievably cold it was. As luck would have it, we were only half a block away from The Dubliner, where Morning Joe had set up shop for the day, and the bar was open by 8 AM.

On that day, the seed was planted. A little over a year later, March 2010 to be exact, the two of us took a giant leap of faith and launched The Blue Deal. In the years since, we’ve made a name for ourselves by developing long-term mutually beneficial relationships with candidates and political consultants across the country, always putting our customers’ satisfaction first, and providing USA-made and Union-printed campaign materials at competitive prices.

Why We Do What We Do
We share our customers’ commitment to the American worker, and we recognize that unions are the key to our shared prosperity. We believe that the American consumer, not the 1%, are the real job creators in our economy, and that they are the fuel that feeds the entire capitalist engine. That is why all our campaign materials are USA-Made and Union-Printed.

We do believe in capitalism, but we believe in capitalism constrained by moral and ethical authority. We started this business because we believe in democracy and because we want to feel good about ourselves and our role in perpetuating it. Sure, we could sell foreign products to customers on both sides of the aisle. We would surely make more money if we did. But the bottom line is that we’d rather be happy than rich.

Meet Ellie the Pugglemunster (Pug/Beagle/Large Münsterländer)
No chronicle of The Blue Deal would be complete without mentioning Ellie, Official Office Dog™. She’s been with us since August 2013. Her duties include evaluating our doggie products and teaching us how to keep calm and carry on when elections don’t go our way.

Besides, who doesn’t like cute dog pics? (Besides Trump that is…)
